Friday, September 08, 2006Jennifer Lopez and her awful Spanish
What is up with J.lo? She made a career as a token latina girl in Hollywood and can't even speak to the press right? I remember when she was milking the Latino dollar prior to and during "Selena", she would communicate to the Spanish press and not sound so bad. Granted she'd have a Bronx accent but she was intelligible. Now that she's a Hollywood player and she gets work not based on her ethnicity, she's gotten really bad! Either she doesn't speak Spanish at all or does it horribly!
I just saw her on Primer Impacto and said stuff along these lines...."El esposa de Hector Lavoe me llamo 5 años atras y me dijo que ella me queria para yo hiciera la papel de ella en la pelicula". She said more but I forgetm it was really bad and choppy. Dang girl! Get u a Berlitz course! Even Selena, who wasn't raised speaking Spanish, was not this bad! Especialy now that she's releasing her Spanish album in December...she should rethink taking some courses. She can't try to sell herself as a Latina artist recording in Spanish and not take the time to even learn it right. Ditto Xtina Aguilera posted by musicbeing at 4:52 AM

Hmmm...I guess in a weird way I kind of agree. Normally I think this type of "spanish speaking persecution" is fucking annoying. It's immediately assumed if you are of any hispanic descent you MUST speak spanish PERFECTLY...no matter what. I have known Mexican-Americans who were 4th and 5th generation. They didn't speak one word of spanish nor did they care and they annoyed by the fact that their peers who were maybe 1st generation gave them shit about it. It makes sense to me especially when you are talking about great-great-great-grandparents that immigrated 100 years ago. Also, as a half breed myself I am utterly disgusted by the pressure to be able to speak a language I didn't start learning until a teenager perfectly. it's totally a US phenomenom though I have noticed. Once you travel outside of the US (or speak with individuals who only speak Spanish) they don't scrutinize your accent or criticize every grammatical error. They think it's cute. I think some bilingual latinos in the US feel the need to be as "latino" as possible because no matter how hard they try they are still an American immersed in American culture, regardless of their attempt to stay in touch with their roots.
Omigod, I can't believe I just wrote that much, lol.
But getting back to J-lo, I agree 100%. The fucking slut has shamelessly marketed herself to the spanish speaking world yet after all of these years hasn't bothered to sharpen her spanish speaking skills. What a lazy bitch.

my name is hennifer lopez and i like tacos and burritos.
on a more serious note, i don't think it's that you should feel pressure to speak another language. what baffles me is the laziness of americans who most of the time can speak one. what disgusts me is the fact that so many people are so quick to write off another language that is not english (in the US) and that some people won't even take the time to learn another language. it shouldn't matter if it's part of one's ethnic makeup or not, people need to culture themselves more and get outside of their comfort zone, and that includes taking up another language. if you look at lots of countries in europe a lot of people speak 3-5 languages. now how fucking cool is that?!

from my expericence, its aLatino - american thing to be overly critical one way or another. there are those LA who thing themselves too "good" to learn thier root language, adn then there are those MEChA enthusists who will try to force feed you the language.
maybe thats just my predjudice against mexican americans talking (did i just make a generalization?! i think i just might have!)....and we'll leave that discussion for another day

U guys, I know exactly what u mean. I think as a Latino it is important to learn about your culture but also, I'm not going to hold it against someone if they don't. People have a choice. But also like Bomitoni said..its stupid NOT to take the time to learn another language when we, as citizens of a 1st world country, have the capacity to supposedly achieve more. But the common American schoe has this "we are the best" attitude and thinks itself too good to educate themselves on the world.
That's why I don't criticize people who don't speak Spanish, like those that as mentioned, tend to shove their views on others and expect people to live in this one dimentional "we are latinos and be proud!" attitude...which can be just as dumb as racist white people telling people to "speak American". But if you're going to sell yourself as a latino or belittle your own kind...then that's something else. Like Jessica Alba showcasing her issues with her "dark Mexican father" or Jennifer Lopez's bad Spanish when she claims to be "Jenny From The Block" and is about to release a Spanish CD.
Stupid fucks.

Oh and for the record..if you're a half breed..then I don't hold anything against you. I find it amazing how much u know about latino culture despite the fact that you're not only a half breed but didn't even grow up immersed in latino culture.
You probably know more than most 1st generation Hispanic-Americans
